How do people not get sick from showering?

I've heard that most people in Thailand always purchase bottled water and stay away from tap water since it can make you really sick. How do people avoid from getting sick when taking baths or showering if most of the water is contaminated? I know when swimming in some rivers in certain countries you can get some very bad parasites. Just curious if I have anything to worry about when visiting?

The water from the tap is not contaminated.

Lived there for years and showered and brushed my teeth with tap water daily. Even drank tap water on occasions, although I mainly drank filtered water.

Theoretically the water entering the system from the treatment plants are safe to drink. It's just what may happen to it between the plant and the tap.

You don't really get sick from showering because you're not drinking the water itself. If the water is on the exterior of your body, the viruses, bacteria etc wouldn't get into your body. I don't know about the water bottled thing but it depends on the place you're going to. Not every place in Thailand has that dirty water.
