Inconsistent download speeds?
I upgraded from standard to broadband to fibre optic broadband about 6 months ago. To begin with we were getting about 10 Mbps upload speed and 40 Mbps download speed. However, for the last couple of months I've only been getting around 10 Mbps download speed but the same upload speed as before (10 mbps).
I've used the diagnostic function in my router and it passes all the tests except for 'ping default gateway'. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problems though.
My router is a TP-Link TD-W9980 and our ISP is plusnet.
Any suggestions on how to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Are you connected with Ethernet or WiFi? From some testing I did with 50/10 Mbps cable at work I came to the conclusion that your WiFi should be at least 3 times as fast as your Internet connection, since WiFi acts sort of as a hub where if the router and a device try to communicate at the same time, data can collide and needs to be resent (which is part of automatic error correction in TCP/IP).
For example when our access point was out in our warehouse and I had a weak 78 Mbps wireless-n signal, I only got 25 Mbps download (but full 11.7 Mbps upload). When I moved the access point into our office and got a solid 150 Mbps wireless-n connection, I speed tested the same as on Ethernet (57/11.7 Mbps).
