Search Warrant and Nobody is Home?
I've always wondered this. The police obtain a search warrant on a home. They knock and nobody is home. The people who live there are shopping at the grocery store.
Do the police have to wait for someone to come home before searching the home?

No they do not have to wait nor do they need a no knock warrant to enter if no one is home. They do need to leave a copy of the search warrant, not the affidavit or complaint for the warrant, in a conspicuous place so the resident can see it when they come home.
A large number of search warrants are served on places where the owner/resident is already arrested.

It depends on the actual wording of the warrant. In MOST cases, if no one answers the door, they can break in to execute the warrant. If that were not the case, it would be easy to prevent a warrant from being executed by not answering the door.
