Hey, all, it's been awhile. Hope all is well. Curious: Have any of you with weapons training sparred with people of other weapon styles?

Update:

So, an example would be for any of you familiar with any form of bojutsu or kenjutsu, have you sparred with someone versed in any of the forms utilizing a saber, dao, European stick fighting styles, etc. If so, what was your experience like, did you learn anything, and was there any attribute of those styles that you feel can be applied to that of what you know?

i've trained for numerous years... i don't hold rank i weapon although i probably should... i don't consider myself to be well versed in weapons... we have trained to spar with weapon and against different weapons... i've done weapons training with people of other styles... i haven't found a lot of differences... the biggest difference that i've found was that in filipino styles they train weapons first and empty hands last... whereas most other styles is empty hands first and weapons later...

Not a different style, but I had sparred someone untrained in saber. Changed by view on fencing completely.

In fencing you usually make small and very efficient movements and attacks. But my friend was making big fast cuts and just kept the blade moving. It was a ridiculously inefficient movement, but I did have a lot of trouble with it and got hit as much if not more than what I was able to dish out. I found that keeping my blade in front of me in the classical saber guard was a bad idea, and I started relying more on distancing and timing even more than I had before.

In had a fencing match with my hung gar instructor. Other then that I have only sparred with other Japanese iaido or kendo styles and the same for kobudo, I have spared various styles of them. Although I have researched a number of non-Oriental styles over the years.

Not to beat the question to death, but was there any difference you noticed in the form of footwork, which from my experience has been pivotal (no pun intended), that you feel you could have applied to what you know? Has there been anything that you learned from other non-Oriental weapons styles that you teach to your students?
