Starvation and metabolism?

I've heard two sides of the argument about weight gain after starvation. Which is true?

1) Because your body has been starving, when you increase your caloric intake your body is shocked by the sudden calorie sufficiency and therefore speeds up metabolism and burns right through it, making you initially lose weight then gain.

2) Because your body has been starving, when you increase your caloric intake your body clings on to every calorie in order to survive and your metabolism slows down, making you gain weight.

    Fasting not starvation.

I have fasted several times, last time was 2 months ago, for a week, I lost 7 pounds and have not put it back on.

It's a myth, your metabolism changes daily, depending on if your working/exercising, eating or sleeping.

I fast for health although I dont mind the weight loss.
