Conceptual Art Assignment ideas?

1. Make a list of 25 concepts of what the phrase "Learning to Fly" means to YOU. This is YOUR assignment, and you will not learn Conceptual Thinking if we just give you the idea.

2. List ANYTHING that comes to mind from the phrase. No matter how 'ridiculous,' or 'unrealistic' it may seem. Sometimes the best concepts arise from the silliest idea.

3. When you have 25 ideas, look at the list, and for each idea, try to draw a thumbnail sketch of how you would make it an art piece. Some might be sculptures, some might be paintings. By drawing a thumbnail, you visualize how you would present it to others, in rough sketch form for you.

4. Look at your thumbnails, and pick the 3 that you like the best. Try to draw a larger Rough Sketch of those 3 concepts. See which of them "talks to you" the loudest. That is the concept art piece you should do.

This is also how Concept Art works. As an artist, YOU use your imagination to create a CONCEPT based on a word, a phrase, a song lyric, anything. If you cannot imagine a concept, and have to ask strangers for what to draw, you are limiting yourself to just being a robot for the imagination of others.
