Why is it 'a utility room', not 'an utility room'?

    The reason is that, although utility is written with a vowel as the first letter, it is pronounced as if it started with a consonant (y) and, thus, takes "a" as the indefinite article.

    Because of the way 'utility' is pronounced, it would be difficult to say it after 'an', which is only used when words are pronounced with a vowel SOUND, not an actual vowel letter.
