    (8 − x)/2 = (3x + 9)/5

    Multiply both sided by LCM(2,5) = 10

    ∴ 5(8 − x) = 2(3x + 9)

    Expand the parenthesis

    ∴ 40 − 5x = 6x + 18

    add 5x to both sides

    ∴ 11x + 18 = 40

    subtract 18 from both sides

    ∴ 11x = 22

    divide both sides by 11

    ∴ x = 2

    You could do it all in terms of decimals or fractions, but it's a little easier if you get rid of the fractions. Multiply both sides by 2*5, the common denominator of 2 and 5.

    (8-x)*10/2 = (3x+9)*10/5

    5(8-x) = 2(3x+9)

    40 - 5x = 6x + 28

    40 = 11x + 28

    22 = 11x

    2 = x
