Does it matter where I connect the battery charger?

Imagine a 12v car battery connected to a device with jumper cables. The device has a red and black wire connected to the jumper cables. Would it be okay if I connected the red and black cables from the charger to the same point? Will it charge the battery?

If you put red (positive) to black (negative) on the same point you will have a short circuit and there will be no charging.

You have to connect the red (positive) on the charger to the red (positive) on the battery AND the black (negative) on the charger to the black (negative) on the battery. If you don't do that you won't get the battery to charge.

It is a good idea in a car to always hook up the positive first and then the negative to the car away from the battery.
