Velvet dress that I want to shrink in the dryer?

I'm planning to wear this velvet dress I bought for my school dance but it is slightly too big on me. I want it to fit me snugly around the waist. I was wondering if I could shrink it by placing it in the dryer? Can you do that with velvet fabrics? If not, what others measures can I take to shrink the size. (Also, I cannot exchange this dress for a smaller size at the store since it IS the smallest size) Thank you peeps.

I am a professional seamstress. Do not put that dress in the dryer, you will ruin it. Take the dress to a seamstress in your area, and see if it can be altered. Make sure you have the undergarments you will be wearing with the dress when you go to your fitting and your shoes if it needs to be shortened.
