What does "second year" mean?

In the context of animals, if it says "during this animal's second year, it begins to go through changes", does that mean the animal goes through changes when it turns one, or when it is age 2?

The second year is after the first year, so it means when the animal is one year old.

It's referring to the year between when the animal has its first birthday and its second birthday.

The first year is from birth until it reaches age 1.

The second year is from that point until it reaches age 2.

Duh. This is simple. Use your brain.
