Flight Delays with American Airlines?

I booked 2 separate flights to get from Des Moines, USA to Oslo, Norway - one with American airlines from DSM to JFK (with a 2.5 hr layover in Charlotte) and then a direct flight from JFK to Oslo with Norwegian Airlines. There will be 8 hours between when I arrive in JFK and my next flight to Norway. I know that there are lots of risks with booking separate flights, so I tried to book it with long layovers. Just wondering, what would American Airlines do for me if my DSM flight was delayed so much that I would miss my flight in Charlotte? Could they put me on a different flight to JFK so I get there in time? I know that they are not responsible if I miss my Norwegian flight, but would they at least try to help me get to JFK before that flight (i.e. get me there NOT 8 hours later than expected)? Help please!!

American's responsibility is to get you to New York (JFK) as close to your scheduled arrival time as possible. The issue of your connection with Norwegian is of no concern to them, however. Considering the 8-hour original layover at JFK, there will doubtless be other flights (probably non-stops) to New York (even to LGA or EWR, in a pinch).

With that 2.5hr layover in CLT, the likelihood of this becoming an issue is fairly small.

You knew of the risk when you booked an itinerary involving two airlines, and you did the logical thing by allowing long layovers giving yourself time to accommodate misconnections. Now you should simply relax in the knowledge that the decision is made with calculated risk, and proper care. At this point, further worrying is pointless. Use the time to learn some basic Norwegian.

Charlotte is an AA hub. They have lots of flights from there to the Eastern US, including NYC. I wouldn't worry too much.

If you have an 8-hour layover in NYC, the biggest potential problems that you have are:

    - mechanical problems in DSM. It's an itty bitty airport. AA (or it's regional carrier) is not going to have other planes in the area to switch the plane

    - weather related in DSM or CLT. If the plane can't fly, the plane can't fly.
