How long can dogs be indoors without being let out to pee?
I am dog sitting for a friend, and am not used to dogs being indoors without a doggie door for their bathroom needs. I have to be gone for roughly 5 hours a day. I let them out right before I leave, and right when I get back. Is this too long? They are large dogs, both roughly 7 years old.

My hubby and I both work 8 hours a day so with the commute our dogs are alone about 8 1/2 hours on average and they are fine.

Best practice would suggest 4 hours, for an adult. However provided the dog settles down when left, it's not vital to stick that that time. We've left ours for 5 hours on occasion, and not come home to any messes. But we don't leave them that long, on a regular basis. The dog may hold, but over time, this could be causing kidney problems - and obviously if the dog has a tummy upset, he may have diarrhoea !!
This dog may, or may not be used to holding if left, so be prepared for a mess when you do go to him. It would depend on what he's used to, and add the fact his owners are gone - being upset. I'd err on the more often, to be honest.

Dear Kasi,
I would not leave my dog for more than 5 hours at the most. Some times as a dog ages their ability to hold it becomes less.
Best of luck Kasi.

Already trained adults, 3-4 hours, puppies 1-2 hours.
If you were an experienced, licensed and insured sitter you would know this.

Larger dogs can hold it longer then smaller dogs. 5 hours should be fine with the dogs.

5 hours shouldn't be a problem for a fully adult healthy dog.

they should be ok, my dog is alone for 8 hours and he is ok.

They can handle it, but when they get big sad eyes and are looking at you near a door, let them out.
