Chances are it is a simple error. But we don't know from the limited information.
It would help if you listed the error code and when it comes up. For all we know it could be a paper jam, out of paper, network or connection problem or something else.
Give us details. Does your computer say error or does the printer? Has the printer worked before on the computer you are using?
Since it is a Canon Pixma, assuming it is Windows, you should be able to go to devices and printers, double click on the printer, then double click on the printer status and ink properties. Make sure the printer is set for default printer as well. If you cannot go that far, then I suggest posting more information or reading up on your printer.
Check to see if you can get a status of any kind. If not, then most likely you have either a driver or connection issue.
