Yes, in your example, the dark throat patch can just be seen on the outstretched neck. Your bird was caught mid-stride, and slightly oblique to the camera,
obscuring most of the throat patch.

It's a gull, but I don't know what species because of the weird head marking. I can tell it's a small one from the black beak and legs. It might be a Saunder's Gull.
