How to remove broken car air-vent cupholder?

When we bought our '90 Nissan Maxima 13 years ago, it had a cupholder attached to the center dash air vent. It worked fine for many years.

But now for some reason it hangs down too low, holding the cup at too much of an angle. It's useless, and I'd like to replace it or at least get rid of it. But I don't see how to remove it without damaging the vent. It has two arms which extend back into the vent.

Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging the dash, and without ending up with the rear ends of those two arms rattling around inside the vent?

I used a flashlight to get a good look inside, and found that it was hooks. I was able to wiggle them loose.

Once I had it out and had a good look at the bottom, I saw that the problem was just that an adjustable slider, which determines how far it sticks out from the dash, had been pushed in. Simple adjustment to push it back out.

Now if only I could find one that accommodates wider cups.

Can you remove the vent that it's attached to? They just snap into place. Removing the vent will prevent the ends of the clip from breaking off when you try to remove the cup holder and give you a better view of how it's attached. The cup holder probably has a stepped clip to account for different depths of the vent louvres. So gently prying up or down on the clip should work.

If I could SEE how it attaches, I may be able to figure out how to release the clips. Alternately, I would probably CUT the cup holder close to the vent.

Sounds like you have been putting in drinks that are too heavy for the holder. For aesthetic purposes, collapse it back into its hole and leave it there. Don't use it again.

I'd go to the dealer to find out if you cn even get them anymore!
