Milage tax deductions?

I am beginning a new job here soon with about a 20 minute commute.

I KNOW I CANNOT DEDUCT COMMUTES.

However, I CAN deduct expenses if I have a qualifying home office (most of the work is done from home). I CAN deduct milage expenses between two jobs.

1) I do NOT have a qualifying home office for this job.

2) I AM beginning a part-time home based business that I will be able to work on when I am not at my current job

Will I be able to deduct expenses from home (my home office of my part time job from home on days I work on it) to my other job?

The way I remember it is you can not deduct mileage to and from work, but you can deduct the mileage when traveling from one job to the next. If you're home business is not a serious one then you would be better off not trying to deduct for a home office because if you sell you house you'll have to pay taxes on the home office portion of the house at a different tax rate. Plus, if you decide not to have a home office anymore it will raise a red flag with the IRS.

Based on your information, it appears that you will not have a home office for your full-time job, but you will have a home office for a part-time home-based business. The home-based business will not be your main source of income. The home office is not your principal place of business. Therefore the trips to your regular job are not deductible.

No. It would be no different than if you have two seperate jobs. You don't get to deduct the mileage between them.

"Will I be able to deduct expenses from home (my home office of my part time job from home on days I work on it) to my other job?" No, that's commuting.

"I CAN deduct milage expenses between two jobs." Depends on what you mean by "two jobs."

You cannot deduct mileage between your self-employment job and your W2 job. That is commuting. Those miles are not attributable to either business.

You can deduct mileage for driving between two job sites (not your home) for your W2 job. This would be deducted IF you itemize your deductions - on your form 1040 Schedule A.

Mileage related to your self-employment would be deducted on your 1040 Schedule C (Net profit/loss from self-employment). This would be miles specifically related to your self-employment business activity.

You will need to keep a detailed written mileage log.

The safest thing to do is to not deduct your first and last leg on any day. All the rest can be deducted.

    no

you have a job that you will commute to from home clearly not deductible for mileage

your home based business is still your home from where you leave to go to the work place

You would flunk an audit in a heartbeat. The IRS does not recognize working at home before and after your day job as being another location.

Mileage expenses from the part time at home work to regular job? No. Think of the mileage as trips between job SITES for the same job.

no. The home office for your business only counts for mileage for that home business.
