How to contect my laptop to internet, ubuntu 7.1?

I just recently changed my old Toshiba laptop default XP program for a ubuntu 7.1 but I have had trouble conducting it to internet, first of all it does not give me the option of wireless internet, but I said ok i will connect it to the modem, and in the network settings I filled my phone number, although I got doubts about which account it s asking me, either my internet original name and password or the one I changed it to, or simply my user name on my Toshiba, then it asks me about which entry I m connecting the laptop, I guess it s the first one according to my modem although the lap setting gives me the option 0, 1, 2, 3 and modem. I m lost, I wish somebody could help me.
