which is correct - "a European" or "an European" ?

    you use the one according to the pronunciation of the word.. there's an unwritten "y" in "european", it's pronounced like "yeuropean" so you use "a" instead of "an".

    opposite thing with hour. it's pronounced "our". so you use "an" not "a". it's "an hour", not "a hour".

    it's a general rule when there's a vowel or consonant but the English language is full of exceptions and irregularities, these are some of those.

    In American English it would be 'a European'. In ultra-correct British English it would be 'an European', but I don't know if most English people would even say that today.
