How does the contractile vacuole help a paramecium survive in a freshwater environment?

    The contractile vacuole physically pumps excess water out of the paramecium.

    o The paramecium is hypertonic with respect to its freshwater environment. Water therefore is constantly entering the cell by osmosis. To keep the cell from bursting, the contractile vacuole collects and expels the excess water.
