Is VITA Tax certification and volunteering good for getting a job as a tax preparer?
Example: working with H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt?

It depends on how picky the employer is. In my state, California, I am an enrolled agent who does quality review for returns prepared by AARP Tax Aide Volunteers. This is a clone of the VITA program. Our volunteers get 40 hours of training to do simple returns with limited scope. In contrast to this, to be licensed by the California Tax Education Council to be legally allowed to prepare returns for compensation you have to have completed a 60 hour course and pass an examination and get updates every year. Tax Prep courses offered by chains like H&R Block and Liberty Tax Service fulfill this requirement. I doubt any chain would hire you without passing a test based on their course but someone else might.

I am going to answer as if you were applying at a franchise, such as H&R Block, JH or Liberty (for example).
As VITA teaches you some basic tax prep knowledge, you would have an edge in learning (and proving you know) what the tax prep place requires. They will typically require you to pass certain test to prove you have a minimum knowledge and require you to get you annual PTIN if you haven't already. However, most of these places are likely to have already hired everyone they plan on hiring for the tax season. To get a seasonal job at one of those places you probably should have applied by September. They would outline what you need to know and would have set you up for tax prep classes (including using their software) and for testing. If they need more preparers than they have they might offer help getting your PTIN.

apply to HnR block, liberty tax, or jackson hewitt, if you pass their test and have ptin. Then yes.
However, since this is a seasonal job, many of them have gone through tempt agencies for staffing need. You will be luckier if you apply through tempt agencies

it is a beginning but to be a registered tax preparer you still need to fulfill the requirements, the 60 hrs beginning education, the registration and the continuing education hours
