What causes a horse to eat another horses mane?

My friends new 3y/o TWH filly (whom she's had for less than a month) ate her 14 y/o Paint geldings mane. I feel so bad for her, he had a 2 foot long mane!

Anyway, my thoughts were that A) she's a youngin or B) she is mineral deficient. What are y'alls thoughts as to what may have happened?

It s pretty common for youngsters to chew on tails and manes. You can try a product called raplast on the remaining hair. Just be very careful that you don t hurt the horse you are applying it to. It s pretty strong. Also, as you take away one spot to chew on, often they find another like a tail or wood somewhere. At 3yr old their caps are popping off and their last incisor is descending the rest of the way. Kind of old for hair chewing.... It s more a yearling thing as a part of teething.

Watch for something called enteroliths which are calcified balls in the intestine and cause colic. They happen a lot with hair chewers I m told.

I'm going to agree with Ella: "allogrooming" ("grooming another"). Watch two "buddy horses" at liberty together; you'll sometimes see them next to each other, facing in opposite directions, scratching each other's backs.

You can simulate this by pinching at your horse's crest while grooming. Many horses appreciate this. :-)

The cosmetic problem for your friend is unfortunate. (The gelding won't care.) But this is most likely an indication that the gelding and the filly are pasture pals. That doesn't always happen.

It does seem to be more of a young horse thing. Much like chewing on barns or fences. Something to do.
