Why a ticket of one-way flight is more expensive than a return ticket?

Strange. A return flight spends more resources than a one way flight, stil a return ticket costs less. What could be an explanation to this?

    We don't know where you are or what airline you are flying.

    In the United States, for more than 10 years, almost all tickets are priced with each route being separate, even when purchasing a round trip ticket.

    Are you sure you are looking at a roundtrip fare and not the just the return portion of the trip?

    It's guaranteed that they sell they that spare seat if you buy a return.
