A square root is a number that if multiplied by itself gives the number you are taking the square root of. Whether you multiply two positive numbers together, or two negative numbers together you always get a positive number. So if you take the square of a negative number it's impossible to multiply it by itself to get a negative number. So they came up with a purely imaginative number called the square root of negative one, and that is given the symbol i. So, the square root of -9=3i. 3i×3i=-9. So the number they reached was a purely imaginary number like the square root of -18002221222, which is 18002221222i. So to get the correct number you multiply by i to get -18002221222 (Poison Control in the USA).
