how can england and uk both be countries?

isnt england, wales, n. ireland, and scottland technically states or counties? how can a country have 4 countries in it? saying england is a country gives me the impression its government is the highest level of authority within its borders, but if the uk government can make laws that override english law, then england would seem like a state or county. because in the u.s. states make laws that have no effect on any other states, but the u.s. government makes laws that affect the country as a whole, and its laws override any state laws. answers from uk citizens preffered.

    UK isn't a country. It's 4 countries.

The UK consists of four countries—England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The last three have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast, respectively. This is not all that unsual the old USSR was made up of a union of 15 multiple subnational republics.

The UK is not a country. The abbreviation stands for United Kingdom. The UK parliament makes laws that apply to the UK and there are MPs present that represent all the countries. There are also laws made in Scotland that apply only to Scots and the other countries have Assemblies which also make laws applicable to themselves. I hope this dispels at least some of your confusion.

Its 4 countries united under one monarch. They all (besides England) have separate governments for local laws, but the Parliament in Westminster is the government for the whole union.

England is a country, thee United Kingdom is a little group. It kinda is like the relationship between the States and the Federal government in the US.
