What age is it expected that a child will want to be something reasonable when they grow up?

Update:

I mean that a child does not say they want to grow up to be a horse or a dog.

Update 2:

What age of child development do all normal kids realize that they will grow up to be people?

    Maybe, age 20!

My daughter wanted to be a "barn", meaning live at a barn where there were horses (age 5).

Kids go through all sorts of stages. Enjoy it, because your child will soon be grown.

If the child has true apprehensions about "growing up" begin having conversations with him/her about things. Are there things in your life that reflect stress or controversy? Decide if there is something like this going on? Maybe, loosen up, just a little and do something fun, laugh a little!

If they want to be a horse, let them know they will need to stay outside and eat grass, not have cookies, etc. Sometimes just going along with silliness helps, also.
