When someone says 'the 1850s', it means a timespan between 1850 and 1860, but why when you say 'the 1800s', it means between 1800 and 1900?

    The 1850's refers to the inclusive period 1850 - 1859. The 1800's refers to the inclusive e period 1800 - 1899.

    Because 5 is followed by 6 and 8 is followed by 9

    It means 1800-1899 to most people.
