Although this word does include humans technically, but when used in scientific publications, it usually excludes humans. The word is fauna, which means all the animal life of a particular region. For example, a paper titled "The fauna and flora of the Santa Ana Mountains" would not include humans. Another word that excludes humans is wildlife.
