What is a liberal?

I am a liberal.... if the you define the word in its historical context and not in the way it has come to be defined in current Western culture. Perhaps it would help if I used the term 'classical liberalism' in labeling myself. A classical liberal is very much like a libertarian. The word 'liberal' has in it the word 'liberty'. In historical terms, a liberal is a person who wants people to be free over their own lives - hating oppression in all its forms while fully accepting the corollary of personal responsibility.

In our present atmosphere, liberalism tends to convey the idea that others, whether persons, institutions or the dumb luck of circumstance, are to blame for any shortcoming (defining everything outside ones self as oppression) with a nearly complete absence of personal responsibility.

If a liberal doesn't want a gun, they will demand that guns should be banned.

If a conservative doesn't want a gun, they won't buy one.

If a liberal doesn't like a news station, they demand that it be shut down.

If a conservative doesn't like a news station, they change the channel.

If a liberal is pro gay marriage, they will demand there be a gay pride parade.

If a conservative is pro gay marriage (they exist), they will simply allow it to be up to the couple.

Liberals demand everyone has to agree with their viewpoint, and they scream racism when people disagree.

Our founding fathers. They were considered "radical" for their time as well.

I may be "liberal' on on topic but be very Conservative on another. Sort of one shoe does not fit all when it comes to describing a person and the ideals in their heads.

Think JFK and then think "liberal," if you don't know anything about him, read about him and learn something. You don't see any of him in DC anymore, and it's a shame, because that's what we need more of down there.
