A formula in the form y equals m x plus b models the value, y, of a new car x years after the initial purchase in 2010. Would you expect b to be positive, negative, or zero?

    I expect b to be the original price, so positive.

    I expect m to be negative, as the value of the car decreases over time.

    y = -3000x + 20,000 would be an example of what I'd expect.

    y = mx + b

    y is the value x years after purchase.

    b is the value of y when x = 0, so that's the value of the car when it's brand new.

    Do you expect the value of a brand new car to be positive, negative or zero?
