Why are we so obsessed with what's good for the economy instead of what's good for people?

A good economy is a fine thing, but things that are good for the economy aren't always good for people. For example, cars used to be built to last, and then someone decided it would be "better for the economy" to make cars that are designed to fail soon after being payed off, and have built in flaws so you have to take them to a mechanic once a week. That's great for the economy, but not so great for people who own a car. Shouldn't we be focusing on making people's lives better than improving an economy built around keeping everyone in debt?

Cars last better than in the past.

Maintenance is key to.long lasting cars.

In wet areas the cars used to rust terribly.

A strong economy gives strong employment that is good for people.
