    Alternate solution: % times amount of each part added together = % times amount of final mix

    g = gallons of pure (100%) acid added

    20 • 5 + 100 • g = 50(5 + g)

    100 + 100g = 250 + 50g

    -100 -50g .... -100 - 50g

    -------------------------------------

    50g = 150

    g = 3

    20% of 5 is 1, so we start with 1 gal of acid

    to 5 gal solution. That's a ratio of 1 / 5.

    Suppose we add x gal acid. Then we have

    1 + x gal acid to 5 + x gal solution.

    Since 50% = 1/2, we have (1 + x) / (5 + x) = 1/2

    Solving, x = 3 gal acid.
