He became progressively deaf throughout his life, especially toward the end of his career. He actually conducted the orchestra and choir for his famous 9th Symphony (with the "Ode to Joy" in it) completely unable to hear the music!

A recent lab test of Beethoven's hair showed he had very high levels of lead, which probably aggravated his (what is thought to be) Crohn's Disease, extreme irritability and difficult personality, and may have even contributed to the volatile nature of some of his music. Lead can cause something similar to a manic like state of semi madness and hot temperament. Sometimes, genius is at it's best when driven by some kind of personal demon.

If this is true, the effects of lead poisoning explains a lot about Beethoven.

Beethoven became deaf over a period of time, and is also thought to have had bipolar disorder. In addition, his autopsy revealed that he had a damaged liver which caused pain and illness during his lifetime.
