I forget who wrote it, but I remember a story about a sighted man who comes across hidden valley where the people who inhabit it were born blind as a result of a genetic defect, and not knowing what sight is, they got along quite well, and it was the newcomer who was at a disadvantage. It was an interesting tale in an O. Henryish way.

The one-eyed man becomes the king--attains the highest status--because he is the only one who can see at all, even though he sees only with one eye. This is like a political situation in which a person who is only a little bit competent is elected the leader of a country because he is more competent than the people who elected him. He could be stupid, but if the people are more stupid than he is, they will think he is smart, so they will make him their leader. Can you think of a country where this is happening now?

The one-eyed man is disabled, yes, but still better off than those around him that are more disabled.
