Is overtime counted for the days work or the week?
I live in California. I work about 75 hours a week. Monday through Thursday I work 15 hour days. Some sites I see it says anything over 40 hours a week is overtime and others just count it for the day. So my question is is it possible to have 46 hours regular time? Or is anything over 40 overtime.
So for a regular 15 hour work day I get 8 regular time, 4 overtime and 3 double time.
I guess what I'm asking is does it make sense to have over 40 hours regular time on my paycheck? I know anything over 8 in a day is overtime and anything over 12 is double time. But when I get my paycheck and it says " 48.5 hours of regular time" is that wrong?

Federal labor law says that anything over 40 hours in one work week is overtime.
However, this only applies to time actually worked. So its very common to see paychecks with 48 hours of straight time if there is a paid holiday during the week or if an employee uses paid vacation time one day but works extra hours another day.
For example if Monday is a paid holiday and you get 8 hours of pay but the day off, then you work 4 x 10 hour shifts Tue-Friday you would get 40 hours of straight time for the 40 hours you actually worked, and 8 hours of straight time for the paid holiday, creating a 48 hour check. Most pay stubs would show the regular wage and holiday pay on separate lines, but not necessarily. Federal laws don't force the employer to pay OT for going over 8 hours in one day, only for going over 40 in the week.
Then there's the issue of California's laws which require OT for anything over 8 hours in one day.
But the federal law is enough that you should never see more than 40 hours of straight time unless the excess was from paid time off such as holiday or vacation pay.

Federal law is anything over 40 hours is overtime. Some states and some local laws require overtime for anything over 8 hours in a single day.
Check with your local (un)employment office and they will be able to tell you the rule for where you live.

In California anything over 8 hours in a day is overtime and anything over 40 hours in a week is overtime.
