Windows 10 Defender as AV on a web server?

I have two options (I am running on a extreme budget), either the built in Windows 10 Defender or use my existing Norton Internet Security Protection.

Just a background here, I am running word press through IIS. The machine is an eleven year old Dell Dimension 3100 (Pentium 4 HT@ 3GHz and 4GB of Ram). It seems that Windows Defender uses far less resources than Norton, that is the main reason here.

But ultimately for a web server running IIS with port 80 open am I 'safer' using Norton instead. I only have port 80 open on the router (I read that is the first line of defense).

Update:

I decided to put Ubuntu on the computer. Amazingly it runs really great on a old Pentium 4 with 4GB of ram. My website response time is much, much faster. It is running the web site even faster than when I tested it on a newer computer with an i7 processor (the newer computer was running Windows 7 with IIS).

In short Linux is defiantly an excellent choice to run a web server (whether the computer is new or a Pentium 4).

If it were me, I would load that machine with Ubuntu or Linux Mint and not worry about it. It will run faster, run better, not be near as subject to windows issues and simply make a much more stable server! Apache is loaded with the OS.

However, if you read up on AV's these days Defender is working very well on Windows 10. (poor choice for a loaded server but if you insist.)

Windows 10 with a publicly accessible web server is an accident waiting to happen...

It does not matter what you do it will eventually be compromised.

Put an enterprise-grade OS on it such as Centos; that's why most of the internet runs on linux/unix, it's infinitely nearer to bombproof than Windows.

I would not rely on Windows Defender for protection.

It depends just what your web server is being used for. If it is not running server applications that can accept data from users, then all you have to worry about is a Microsoft update that is infected. (Some years ago Microsoft released a software CD that carried a virus, and with Windows 10 disabling updates is not something Microsoft encourage although I have done it on one of my W10 systems. If Microsoft sanitise their updates with their own AV, then you need something more robust than Windows Defender to protect yourself.)

Norton is rated fairly highly and is much better than Windows Defender. You might also look at the free version of Avast if the budget is tight.

    I hope this helps.

Why are you putting antivirus on a web server?
