Is VEGAN a really healthy diet?

The answer is that it depends as much on what you eat as with any other diet. A recent study indicated that the average vegan diet is higher in vitamin C and fibre, and lower in saturated fat than one containing meat. In addition, statistics show that vegans have a lower BMI (height-to-weight ratio) than meat eaters – in other words, they are skinnier.

Also know that meat fat contains more calories per gram than other foods, and so vegans may consume fewer calories as a result. Finally, a vegan diet is generally thought to contain more cereals, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds than a non-vegan diet.

Sounds great right? Not quite. In terms of micronutrients, a vegan diet is actually more susceptible to being nutritionally poor. A vegan diet is naturally low in calcium, vitamin D, iron, vitamin B12, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, if you follow a vegan diet it is essential that you get enough of these nutrients through specific vegan food sources – and may even need to take additional supplements.

It's healthy for some people but you need to make sure you eat the right vegan food

I hear it can be, but takes more work than people are willing to put into it. Never did it myself and never met anyone who stayed with it more than a year.

I went vegan and was surprised at the health benefits I experienced. Since then, I've learned that it's a really healthy diet, probably the ideal diet. (As long as you eat whole foods, and depending on which foods you eat most.) I didn't expect it to be. I stumbled across this by choosing to go vegan for other reasons.

No. And I never was a vegan, and I have no intention of ever being vegan. I'm not even vegetarian.

I have heard that the vegan diet is not healthy. And it's probably right.

The only ones who say that veganism is healthy are PETA propagandists and leaders/members of false religions. A lot of times these groups lie in order to push an agenda. Not to mention that they also lie in order to manipulate and control people. It's about money and power.

I've been vegan for several years, and I am in great health. My blood work is perfect. So yeah, I guess it can be.

In my opinion... no. It's too high in carbs and too low in fat.

It is the healthiest diet that there is, if you do it right. As Louis pointed out, you could have beer and chips all day long and that would be vegan but not healthy.

If you eat a well balanced diet of organic (when possible) vegetables, fruits, beans, rices, other grains, nuts, and seeds, you'll do really well.

I'm MUCH healthier now as a vegan than I ever was as a meat eater or even as a vegetarian.

Yes if you do it properly, do some research, log onto the Vegan Society website for all the info you need and claim a free starter pack. Also protein is the least of your worries it is in nearly all foods.
