What went wrong during my sister's pregnancy?

The baby wouldn't come out so they put her in labor. She was too tight even when they put her in labor. It took 23 hours to have the baby. The doctor told her to quit pushing or she would bleed to death. She strained so hard, and they said it looked like she had the hardest pregnancy. Even the baby's head had a cone shape swelling in the head, but it went away and he was a huge bigger than usual baby. The oddest part is how she looked like she got beat up in a fight! We know people may look rough after having a baby, but she was extremely bruised, eyes incredibly red to a point where our mom who had 6 kids said she never seen such a breakout and such a hard pregnancy. She's pregnant again, and we and her husband hope this doesn't happen again....

Who said having a baby was easy? She pushed too hard and ruptured some blood vessels in her face. Could have been in her brain. If she gained more than 30 pounds she might want to watch her weight better next time.

just make sure the doctor treating her has all the details of the first pregnancy. they will keep an eye on the size of the baby and may opt for a caesarean instead

I thought of gestational diabetes too. I'm surprised that they didn't do a caesarean on her.

Have her talk to the doctor about this. It may be a matter of not gaining more than 26-30 pounds during pregnancy and making sure she gets plenty of exercise.

Gestational diabetes was most likely the cause, tell her to stay away from sugar and all products which contain sugar as much as possible while pregnant. I lost a daughter at birth because of this disease and it was basically the same scenario as your sister's labor for me.

Sounds like she had a large baby. While it's possible that she had GD, unless that was specifically mentioned/diagnosed, it sounds like she just had a big baby and had to push a lot to get baby out. (Sometimes hard pushing can cause blood vessels to break in mom's eyes -- doesn't cause any lasting harm.)
