Flaming Lips Fans: "A Spoonful Weighs a Ton" or "Waitin' for a Superman"?

The reason I ask is because these songs, both from "The Soft Bulletin" album, explore the idea of overcoming hardship (or tomorrow coming) being a miracle, and create the image of a superhero that doesn't actually exist to illustrate the theme.

That was probably a really bad explanation but you get the point. Which song is better in your opinion?

    Howdy Euan,

This is a cool Q here man, Your connection of the two songs is really impressive. I've always enjoyed listening to this in the wee hours for it's chill appeal. It really does sound like a sci-fi soundtrack to me, so I find your connection on these two songs really interesting.

A Spoonfull Weighs a Ton is quite sparse and the use of the drum machine, though effective, cannot match the constant march of drums as appears on Waitin' for a Superman for overall listenability.

Although Waitin' for a Superman is the more accesible song- A Spoonfull Weighs a Ton contains one of the Eureka moments in the album, with all that talk about the recycling of stars and what it can achieve.

In terms of context I feel it is the better song.

    Cheers.

I love both of those songs, but I prefer "A Spoonful Weighs a Ton". The arrangements are outstanding, and they're psychedelic in a wonderfully upbeat way. I love the choruses in that song, as well.

Waitin for Superman the entire song does not lose anything. The music stays and the lyrics dont become cheesy and sappy. Also its a fun song to play, especially if your a drummer. A Spoonful Weighs a Ton is not a bad song either, it just cant stack up to Waitin for Superman

I'm not a Lips guy, but I have that record and re-listened to both songs just now and I came to exactly the same conclusion as Tortfeasor (except that I didn't listen to the Remix). I just think Spoonful is a much more interesting song. Strong opinion, but no offense meant to anyone who likes the song, just my take, I kind of felt like Superman was a little disposable.

EDIT: Have you done the new Grandaddy yet? If so, how do you like it? I've been meaning to give it a spin but I've been really hooked on a couple of mixes and I'm ready for a more "clean slate" state of mind to go with it.

A Spoonful Weighs a Ton is the more sophisticated song IMO. I like it better. The album mix of Waitin for a Superman is pretty forgettable to me, but the remix at the end of the album is probably their most accessible pop song.
