12 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoRock and Pop: What are some songs that are based on other songs you enjoy?
I was wondering if you guys know any songs that are not exactly covers, but are heavily influenced by another particular song.
My example is "Nowhere Nothin' F-up" from Built to Spill's debut album, which is very similar to "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'!" from The Velvet Underground album Loaded.

19 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoWhat's your favourite Yo La Tengo song?
I'm in the mood for another band-specific question. Yo La Tengo have been on the go for over 30 years and have explored a wide variety of musical styles, so I'm interested to know what you guys think are some high points in their career. Thanks in advance!
4 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoFlaming Lips Fans: "A Spoonful Weighs a Ton" or "Waitin' for a Superman"?
The reason I ask is because these songs, both from "The Soft Bulletin" album, explore the idea of overcoming hardship (or tomorrow coming) being a miracle, and create the image of a superhero that doesn't actually exist to illustrate the theme.
That was probably a really bad explanation but you get the point. Which song is better in your opinion?

No sign of Liv today, so I figured I'd post the question. Here's a couple of cool covers:
"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" - The Sacred Mushroom (The Kinks)

"Suddenly Everything Has Changed" - The Postal Service (The Flaming Lips)
14 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoHey R&P. Is anyone up for writing a brief, retrospective and nostalgic album review?
I'm inviting everyone here to join me in listening to an album that you used to love, but have not listened to for a long time, and then write up a brief review.
David Gray's "White Ladder" was one of the first full albums I listened to in my life, when I was about 6, and one of a fair few albums I liked at that time which played a pivotal role in the development of my music taste. I listened to it again for the first time in about 10 years last week, and I have to say it still holds up very well. I believe David Gray is a very talented singer-songwriter - he puts a lot of passion into his songs, which are mostly piano and acoustic ballads. My favourite songs on the album are "Babylon", "Silver Lining" and "This Year's Love".

Rock and Pop4 years agoRock and Pop: A-Z challenge?
Hey guys! I've listened and responded to all the posts for this Q now - sorry for the delay: /question/index?qid=20170...
Anyway, here's a challenge. Can you name a band you like for every letter of the alphabet, and also name your favourite song by each band?
6 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoCan you recommend a few songs or an album by the band Shipping News?
Thanks in advance.
1 AnswerRock and Pop4 years agoI want to get into Traffic. Should I get "John Barleycorn Must Die" or "The Low Spark of the High-Heeled Boys" first?
If possible also, can you explain why the album you have recommended is better for a newcomer? Thanks very much in advance and Happy New Year.
Rock and Pop4 years agoRock and Pop: Shall we exchange some music recommendations for the new year? (and a bunch of BQs)?
Happy New Year to all the regular users and contributors of Rock and Pop, and happy New Year also to anyone else who happens to be on this Q'. I hope you all had a good Christmas and enjoyed a break from work.
Here goes...
MQ: Can you recommend me a song or album to listen to? I'll give you one back in the comments.
BQ1: Do you have any New Year's resolutions relating to music?
This may seem like a crazy question, but I'm personally making it a point to see as many great local bands live as I can.
BQ2: What album are you most looking forward to in 2017? It can be one that's already announced or a TBA, or both if you like.
BQ3: What was your favourite album of 2016, and why?
BQ4: Are there any books or documentaries about music or a band that you'd like to recommend?
Thank you, and best wishes to you all.
6 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoRock and Pop: What music have you discovered over the past month?
I've finished listening to HANL's "Deathconsciousness" now and have listened to it several times - it's a great album. The fact that such an excellent album was produced on such a small budget should be an inspiration to many musicians and it is great evidence that most people can now make music in their spare time and have a chance to get noticed for it, without being one of the lucky few career musicians to be awarded a recording contract. "Deathconsciousness" also creates and develops a very dark, morbid atmosphere and features a broad mix of musical styles.
A YouTube link to the album, and also a link to an interesting article I'd recommend if you are interested:

8 AnswersRock and Pop4 years agoDoes anyone know where I can find the version of "A House is Not a Motel" where the music ends abruptly?
Multiple sources have told me that there is a version of "A House is Not a Motel" from the Love album Forever Changes where the song ends abruptly at its peak as opposed to being faded out, but I can only find the fading version on YouTube. If anyone can give me a link to it I would be very grateful. Thanks!
