Rock and Pop: What are some songs that are based on other songs you enjoy?

I was wondering if you guys know any songs that are not exactly covers, but are heavily influenced by another particular song.

My example is "Nowhere Nothin' F-up" from Built to Spill's debut album, which is very similar to "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'!" from The Velvet Underground album Loaded.

    Hey Sarge!

A story that I really enjoy about Pavement is when they were making Slanted and Enchanted they were a couple songs short so they basically wrote a couple of The Fall tunes to bridge the gap. I haven't listened to a ton of The Fall so I'm not sure which songs made up those couple of songs, but I think that's a pretty hilarious story.

Also going with Built to Spill, I thought what they did with You Were Right with all of the references to classic rock tunes was very cool.

I also really enjoy Baby Britain by Elliott Smith, featuring references to the Beatles' Revolver and the song "Crimson and Clover."

One of my favorite songs that I've ever written was also heavily inspired by Coffee and TV by Blur (though it kind of diminished through the collaborative process, as it was meant to) and directly references Here Comes the Sun.

Baby Shot Me Down by Beth Hart is a clear homage to My Baby Shot Me Down by Nancy Sinatra.

Drake and Rihanna s Take Care is a homage to I ll Take Care of You which was first performed by Bobby Bland.

Kid Rock doing that song about "listening to" Sweet Home Alabama "all summer long". LOVE that song and i'm not a huge fan of Kid Rock at all, just not usually my cup of tea. But that song reminds me of summers growing up in a small town, it really takes me back, he's got a lot of sentiment behind that I think.

I know what you mean. There is an inspiring song by the Jonas Brothers called Kids Of The Future. I think it is influenced by the song Kids Of America. I heard the song Gangstas Paradise was influenced from Stevie Wonder's song Pastime Paradise.

personally, i always liked female versions. it just lacks a little bit of heart when it isn't sung about being a prostitute.

Cream recorded two versions of "Lawdy Mama" -- one fast....

    ...and one slow

Felix Pappalardi and Gail Collins played around with the slow version, wrote new lyrics for Eric Clapton to sing, and transformed an obscure blues song into "Strange Brew".

Wow, that's gonna take a few listens to digest. That's taken from my very favorite VU song and is so wildly different I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

The Black Crowes made an awesome cover of 'Oh! Sweet Nuthin'.
