12. Helping out on an adjacent farm.

I was 15 and my first job was in my High School Library. That job lasted four years.

Real job? 16, but I had a large number of customers whose lawns I mowed regularly starting when I was about 11.

4. I got paid a penny apiece to fold boxes at my father's bakery. It kept me busy while my parents worked, and I earned 50 cents on the very first day. My first paying job for someone other than family was working as a Dairy Princess at the local Dairy Queen when I was 16. It was a great job: We gave free stuff to all of our friends, sprayed each other with Mr. Misty syrup and used those long, plastic spoons to build catapults that shot globs of ice cream clear across the store. We were really terrible employees, but it sure was a lot of fun. My first real job as an adult was as the Executive Director of a small Camp Fire Girls council. I got paid to go camping, sing around the campfire, sample candy that we were going to sell, attend banquets, and sit on parade floats. And after that I opened a bakery........really, my working life has been one long party!
