To connect remotely to your LAN, you need a router that supports a VPN endpoint. If your router doesn't support a VPN endpoint, you can still do it with one of the local machines, but not as easily.

Get a public static IP address and a router that supports IPsec VPN and a VPN client for your remote device. Configure router and you are in business.

use VPN if you want to extend one of your Local Area Networks appliance safely and securely.
Many NAS drives comes with Cloud Solution to set up if your not comfortable with configuring VPN on your network.
These cloud solutions are great and work very well right out the box and gives you access without the use of VPN or Port forwarding.
