I suggest you read "Evolution" by Stephen Baxter. It's fiction and speculative, but a fun read.

The book presents (in fiction) that there is a genetic basis for religion, and a selection bias for it.

The God gene hypothesis is the controversial hypothesis that proposes that a specific gene, called vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2), predisposes humans towards spiritual or mystic experiences.

Humans are pattern seekers. They do not like things left unexplained. When our species was in its infancy it did not understand that germs caused disease. They could not prevent the transmission of germs and they were unable to treat the sick. Earthquakes, volcanoes, lightning and other natural events frightened them. They had no knowledge of geology or meteorology. Therefore, they invented explanations. They invented gods. They believed the gods were pleased when things went well. Death, sickness, crop failures, drought, etc. were all thought to happen because the gods had been displeased. They sought to please the gods in various ways by making offerings such as human and other animal sacrifices, offering gifts, praying or performing various rituals. In good things followed these they thought the gods had been appeased. If things carried on being bad they thought they had not done enough to satisfy the gods.

At the present time the human brain, and what we call the mind, is still largely unexplored territory. The fact that we humans are a patterned seeking animal may be hard wired into our brains. It might well be that this is the result of genes. At the moment, however, we cannot say is the human invention of religion or the need to answer the unknown will be found to have a genetic basis.
