Road Trip in New England?

I am trying to plan a trip along the New England Coast. I want this to include Martha's Vineyard, Boston, Acadia NP, and a clam bake on the beach. I have no idea where to start. Please help!

You already have the makings of a basic plan.

Consider adding Newport, RI to your list. To get to Martha's Vineyard you need to take the ferry from Woods Hole, MA. Since you are going to be on Cape Cod you should check out the rest of it. Places of interest - Hyannis, but just to see the Kennedy compound, the better destination is Chatham. You should drive out to Provincetown too. On the way to Boston from Cape Cod is Plymouth Plantation, of Plymouth Rock fame.

When you leave Boston I recommend driving out to Rockport, MA on Cape Ann. Take state route 127 from Salem (another spot you could spend a solid day exploring) to Rockport, it runs right along the coast it's a beautiful drive.

Cape Ann is best know for clams. There are several "clam shacks" along state route 133 between Gloucester and Newburyport, MA. See the website http://www.hollyeats.com/ in particular "eating the New England coast" for reviews of the assorted clam shacks, my personal favorite is "The Clam Shack" in Ipswitch, MA.

Rt133 brings you into Newburyport, MA, from the there get onto US Rt1 and head north towards New Hampshire. When you get to the traffic lights in Salisbury, MA take Rt110 to Salisbury Beach, get on Rt1A and start driving north. This will take you along the very short New Hampshire coast line, which probably has the best scenery you will see. Rt1A will eventually bring you to Portsmouth, NH.

From Portsmouth get back on to Rt1 and take it all the way to Bar Harbor. You can drive Rt1 from Kittery to Bar Harbor in a day, but it will be a very long day. Rt1 doesn't move fast and you can hit major traffic/slow moving traffic. Along the way you may want to take detours to places like York Beach, Kennebunkport and Boothbay Harbor.

I'd suggest the website Tripadvisor.com is a good source to discover what is in a particular location, such as Boston. There is a website called roadtrippers that can show you all the points of interest along your designated route.

I'm not sure where you can get that clam bake on the beach? Lot's of places serve the elements of clam bake, but I don't know of any that actually cook it buried in the sand.

Source(s): 20+ year New England resident (live on the coast of NH), best vacation my wife and I ever took was a drive up Rt1 from Biddeford, Maine to Bar Harbor. We had no timetable, no agenda. We stopped and stayed at places we found interesting. On that trip, we liked Camden, Maine the best. Bar Harbor is VERY touristy.

Looks like you've got a plan. Decide how much time you want to spend in each place. Then google hotels and B&Bs in each place you want to stay. You might try AirB&B, too. That area has lots of nice bed and breakfast places.

I don't know if it's possible to just have your own clam bake- there are rules about having fires, even if they're buried in sand. But there might be some that you can buy a ticket to.

    Try this thing called internet.

U can visit numerous websites for actual info.

Better figure out how much money u got upfront.

U'll need to figure out how much time u got to spend each place
