Page ix of the 1986 book "The Trigonometric Travelogue" reports that it's 2080 miles from Timbuktu to Dien Bien Phu and 3530 miles from Dien Bien Phu to Kalamazoo. (Seriously!) But, since going via Dien Bien Phu is not the shortest way from Timbuktu to Kalamazoo, I guess we'll have to figure it out:
Lat/long of Timbuktu = 16.8N, 3.0W;
Lat/long of Kalamazoo = 42.3N, 85.6W.
cos(R) = sin(16.8)sin(42.3) +
+ cos(16.8)cos(42.3)cos(85.6-3.0) =>
cos(R) = 0.28572 =>
R = 73.4 degrees of arc.
The circumference of the earth is about 24900 miles, so the 73.4 translates into
(24900 miles)*(73.4/360) = 5077 miles.
