Geometry word problem?

A case is tightly packed with 6 cylindrical tin cans. Find the ratio of the volume of the box to the combined volumes of the cans.

    You could place on can atop the previous one (stack like tennis balls or Pringles). That would use almost 100%

    Did you square pack or stagger pack?

    I assume for simplicity, it's square.

    Vol = B*W*H

    For a tight 2x3 stack, as in pic below:

    V = 4r * 6r * h

    v = 24 r² *h

    The Vol of each can is 𝛑r² *h

    V = 6 * (𝛑r² *h)

    Ratio is (24 r² *h) / (6𝛑r² *h)

    Ratio is 4/𝛑

    Volume of 6 cans = 6πr²h

    Volume of 1 case with 6 cans = LWh = (6r)(4r)(h) = 24r²h

    Ratio = 24r²h/(6πr²h)

    Ratio = 4/π .................. [Ans.]
