in the sentence below, does it mean that there's a river named Manhattan or it comes from manhattan?

    It means they are in an apartment on Roosevelt Island. Roosevelt Island is an island separated from Manhattan Island by a river (the East River).

    Neither. It means that Manhattan (an island) is on one side of the river, and Roosevelt Island is on the other side of the river. The river flows between the two islands.
