Help with a math question?

How do you do this problem? I need an explanation.

A table is placed in a 14 ft/18 ft room so that there is an equal

amount of space of width s feet all the way around the table.

Write and simplify an expression for the area of the table.

    Draw a diagram...let the distance between the table and the top ( and bottom) be x. Let the distance between the table and the left( and right) be x.

    One side of the table will be 18 -x-x 18-2xand the other side 14-2x.

    Area table = (18- 2x)(14-2x)

    252 -36x -28x + 4xsquared.

    Area of table = [ 14 - 2s ] [ 18 - 2s ] ft²

    Area of table = 252 - 64 s + 4s² ft²
