Help with a math question?

A box is formed from a 1 in. by 18 in. piece of cardboard by

cutting a square with side length m inches out of each corner

and folding up the sides. Write and simplify an expression for the

area of the base of the box.

How do you do this problem? I need an explanation.

1 inch looks to be rather a small value?

Draw the picture of the rectangle with the squares cut out.

The smaller rectangle in the middle forms the bottom of the box. The parts with the corners cut out form the sides.

You have cut m from each side of the big rectangle to make the smaller rectangle. So its length is 2m less than the length of the original cardboard, and its width is 2m less than the original width. Write those expressions.

Area is length x width. Multiply those expressions.
